Madrid shopping: What’ the best street market in Spain?   by Harriet Freeman

If you are in Madrid and want to do some nice shopping, you must go to el Rastro in Madrid. It is a flea market which is one of the most famous in Spain. Its name means “trail” and it was named that way because the route along it is the same the slaughtered animals did in the past to get the Ribera de Curtidores street, where the skins were tanned and manufactured. Don’t be afraid of bumping into any animals, they don’t go on that route anymore.

So, get up early on a Sunday morning and go to Plaza Cascorro. There you can start your route and you can see the first stalls selling alternative clothes, t-shirts with funny messages and a lot of products manufactured in leather, from sandals to hippie-bracelets made by young people.

You can continue walking past military clothing and adventure shops and go to San Cayetano street, or painters street. There you will be able to buy marinas and hunting scenes, as well as watercolor paintings with motifs of Madrid at low prices. The legend says that you can get a Zurbaran or a Goya painting, but it is not true. Don’t let people cheat you.

If you’re looking for some music, go to la Ribera street. There you will find music stalls with all kinds of music from all over the world, specially flamenco and modern music. Also, you can buy homemade jewels in this street.

Continue your walk along the Rastro in Madrid and you’ll get to Fray Ceferino González street. This street is known as the birds street because shops there used to sell and exchange all kinds of pets. From parrots and cats, to turtles and hens! At the moment, animals are still sold, but there aren’t as many as in the past. Nevertheless, the number of stalls selling accessories for hunting and breeding birds have gone up.

You’ll meet peddlers selling food and drinks, in case you are either hungry or thirsty. Go on to Carlos Carnero Arniches street, where you will find bargains and old books. There are early editions and curiosities of all kinds, from old postcards to serious books. In the streets around the books street, you can find antique shops with funny pieces of furniture. You can have fun and bargain at any time of the day. The best time, though, is before 11 in the morning, before thousands of people attend their appointment with the street market. You can also find a good bargain at the end of the day, when shops close.

For those who love the cinema, Mira el Sol street has anything they could look for. From a version of the director of a cult movie in Japanese without subtitles to the adventures of the cute Heidi. Also, if you prefer comics, magazines and stickers, go to Rodas street and General Vara del Rey street, where you can buy videogames and software, too.

So, el Rastro in Madrid is a huge street market where you can find anything you could think of. It is really a landmark of the city and a must. You can’t miss it!
